Rosewood residents are invited to pick up a paddle and have a shot at pickleball with a come-and-try day at the Rosewood Showgrounds Exhibition Hall on Saturday, 6 July.

Pickleball, a low-impact sport suitable for all ages combining elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong, has become one of the fastest-growing sports in the nation over the past seven years.

Hosted by the Ipswich Pickleball Association, the Rosewood sessions are open to all ages and will have three follow-up sessions on July 16, 20 and 23, with more dates from August onwards.

IPA committee member Lorraine Owens said it was a great alternative sport for aging or injured players.

“Pickleball is an addictive game with a funny name, its easy to play, and you can learn it in minutes,” Owens said.

“It’s more intimate and social than tennis, players are physically closer and families can play together.

“For the veterans and their families, we helped Invictus Australia do a session at Ipswich State High a month or two ago and they loved it.”

Pickleball is often played as a two-a-side doubles game with teams competing in a first-to-ten point competition to first-to-eleven point competition.

In 2016, the first purpose-built Pickleball courts in Australia were built in Queensland at Halcyon Glades, Caboolture.

In April 2024, five new affiliate member clubs throughout Queensland joined Pickleball Queensland, including the Ipswich Pickleball Association.
